Holistic / Functional Nutrition Explained

HOLISTIC HEALTH MODEL

The field of Holistic Nutrition encompasses the concept of "wholism" (all interconnected parts make up a complete picture) and can differ widely in theory and practice from the "reductionism" model (compartmentalizing context into simpler, isolated parts) followed in conventional nutrition.  A holistic perspective considers the overall person (rather than focusing on a specific body part or complaint) and takes into account biochemical individuality, meaning each individual - and their physiology - is totally unique.  The holistic emphasis on underlying causes of deficiency over symptom management is considered a primary pathway to better health. A fundamental holistic strategy for optimal wellness is to practice a healthy, balanced lifestyle, which includes nourishing food, natural (nutritional/herbal) “medicine”, fresh air, stress reduction, quality sleep, physical activity, social connection, creativity, play and inspiration.

Foundations for Healing embraces a Functional Nutrition perspective and provides Holistic Nutrition education and support for healthy adults and for those with specific concerns.  We support optimal wellness with specific dietary, nutritional, herbal and lifestyle suggestions while considering the underlying the causes of suboptimal health whenever possible.

HOLISTIC NUTRITION PROFESSIONALS

A holistic nutrition professional supports health, wellness and the body’s innate healing response by using whole foods, targeted nutritional supplements, therapeutic herbs and lifestyle modifications as key practice tools that promote healing naturally and noninvasively.  The concept of therapeutic nutrition is that when properly grown and prepared, real whole foods and the exquisite nutrients and phytochemicals found within them, are supportive to health – thus enhancing overall quality of life and well-being.

FOOD FIRST…  Since a fundamental (and Hippocratic) concept in natural healing is "food is medicine", holistic nutritionists advocate choosing real, whole, high-quality food as a way of life (i.e., fresh, seasonal, nutritionally dense, minimally processed, not overcooked, non-genetically modified, and organically grown whenever possible).  Holistic nutrition professionals also use various assessment tools to analyze nutritional status and body system imbalances in order to develop customized therapeutic protocols.

"One of the biggest tragedies of human civilization is the precedent of chemical therapy over nutrition.

It is a substitution of artificial therapy over natural, of poison over food, in which we are feeding people poisons

trying to correct the reactions of starvation."  - Dr. Royal Lee

WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS

In the world of nutritional supplements, Foundations for Healing is committed to the lesser-known but longstanding paradigm of concentrated, organically grown, whole food-based supplements.  These natural substances, developed in 1929 by Dr. Royal Lee (Standard Process Whole Food Nutrient Solutions), are readily recognized by the body as biochemical fuel.  When appropriate, these products are paired with premium quality medicinal herbs developed by world-renowned herbalists (MediHerb of Australia). These unprecedented and unparalleled nutritional and herbal products are designed and designated for use by qualified and appropriately-trained holistic nutrition professionals to help support underlying changes in physiology and are meant to be accompanied by practitioner oversight and client education.

Most nutritional supplements are synthetic, non-nutritive and toxic, while many herbal supplements are highly adulterated or otherwise substandard. For Foundations for Healing, value, quality, safety and efficacy are of utmost importance.
